Are the actions to protect the planet from global warming include actions against ozone depletion?

or are two different approaches to environmental problemsAre the actions to protect the planet from global warming include actions against ozone depletion? As Jeff M has said, ozone depletion and global warming are quite different.

The thinning of the ozone layer is caused by chemical reactions that take place in the atmosphere. Our use of what are termed Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS鈥檚) released substantial amounts of harmful chemicals into the atmosphere. You may have heard people talk about CFC鈥檚 or chlorofluorocarbons, this is a generic term for the ozone depleting gases that we used in all manner of things from air-conditioners to the propellant in aerosol canisters.

The use of ODS鈥檚 has been significantly reduced in recent years and the 鈥榟ole鈥?in the ozone layer is beginning to repair itself.

Global warming is another consequence of the gases that we emit but this time it鈥檚 what are termed the Greenhouse Gases (GHG). The most common ones are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.

These gases enable a physical reaction to occur in the atmosphere as opposed to a chemical one. In the case of the GHG鈥檚 they retain heat, our modern lifestyles produce a lot of these gases and as they accumulate in the atmosphere more heat is being retained.

There is a crossover in that some gases are both ODS鈥檚 and GHG鈥檚. One such common gas, which has now been all but banned, was dichlorodifluoromethane, often known by the trade name of Freon. This was used largely as a refrigerant in fridges, freezers and air-con unit.

There are other connections between global warming and ozone depletion. For example, the ozone layer (or lack of it) is a contributory factor to global warming or cooling; but by and large these are two separate issues that require different approaches to tackle them. Are the actions to protect the planet from global warming include actions against ozone depletion?
If you take action against global warming, you help reverse ozone depletion (from other than CFC sources).

The thermocline at the top of the troposphere protects the stratosphere from the intrusion of water vapor from below. The thermocline is sensitive to temperature in the troposphere, and as it warms, more water vapor goes across it. Also global warming adds to the water vapor in the troposphere.

Water vapor serves both to block ozone formation (producing NOx instead), and it provides a decay path for ozone (producing H2O2, which then decays to water, and repeats).

And both "polar stratospheric clouds" and "noctilucent clouds" show that it is weakening.

Yes, "global warming" and "ozone depletion" are separate concepts, separate causes... but they are linked by more than just occurring in the same atmosphere.

Controlling global warming (if such is possible), will at least help the ozone layer. Are the actions to protect the planet from global warming include actions against ozone depletion?Actually, despite the answerer above. Ozone depletion and global warming are two different things. Ozone, or O3, is susceptible to many types of chemicals. Human causes of ozone depletion are CFCs and a number of other chemical types. While both O3 and CFCs are labeled greenhouse gasses they are not the main culprits of anthropogenic warming. O3 assists in protecting us from gamma ray radiation from the Sun. Greenhouse gasses assist in trapping 'trapping' infrared radiation near the surface of the Earth. A depletion of Ozone actually decreases the temperature of the Ozone layer. Are the actions to protect the planet from global warming include actions against ozone depletion?
I am in Australia, we all know about the Ozone layer here, as we are right under it and suffer more from UV rays when we are out and about in the sun.

The ozone layer is slowly being fixed, but apparently it will still take 50 years or more for it to get back to a healthy state.

Pitty now we are stuffing up everything else as well. I really wish someone could tell me how we are going to get rid of all that plastic floating in the ocean (the great pacific garbage patch) - I gotta say that really scares the crap out of me. I am totally ashamed to be a human, I think we have really fuc ked everything up big time. I just pray we can recover from ourselves. Are the actions to protect the planet from global warming include actions against ozone depletion?Yes, definitely. Global warming is one of the direct consequence of Ozone depletion.
