Every year americans drink more and more bottled water and that number is expected to rise every year. Regardless of whether or not your a tree hugger it is easy to see an environmental problem here. This debate is not against the plastic used for bottled water (just look at how many are used for soda!), but rather the use of the bottled water itself. Most of the companies just take normal tap water and filter it, just like people do in their own houses. Most bottled water is no better for you than normal tap water. Cities want people to not be afraid of using their tap water right in their homes, and stop wasting their money.

Reusable containers would be ideal... people could carry around their own mug or water bottle. Or, the stores could serve the water in reusable glasses. Could use glass and charge enough fees for the glass to force people to recycle more often. Or howabout mandate that you can't write "Do not reuse this plastic bottle" on the packaging. It's not necessarily the plastic bottle they object to, it's the fact you can purchase a sturdy, reliable, and reusable bottle to put tap water in.



The objection is to folks who buy tap water in plastic bottles instead of just using the tap water from home. There have been several news items recently detailing that most water brands are, indeed, just normal tap water repackaged.Since some people are so against plastic water bottles what could be a viable substitute?

A simple solution is a deposit law for the water bottles like there is in many states on soda and beer bottles. It is a major pain in the neck, but here in Michigan you can travel for miles along any road or highway without seeing a discarded bottle. And, huge amounts of plastic are returned to processors for reprocessing. An ancillary benefit is that the habit of not tossing bottles from the car seems to have carried over to all sorts of trash. From my observations, and anecdotal studies by many others with whom I've talked, bottle deposit states are notably cleaner. That said, and that I do support bottle laws, I hate the inconvenience of bottle laws.
