What does it mean when you see a bumper sticker that says to boycott farm-raised Salmon?

Is there an environmental problem with farm-raised Salmon; what about farm-raised Catfish? What does it mean when you see a bumper sticker that says to boycott farm-raised Salmon?Farm raised catfish are fine. The reason that farm raised salmon aren't good is because they are raised in the open ocean inside floating containment nets. This leads to the following problems:

1. They escape and introduce disease into wild salmon populations.

2. The sheer amount of feces and uneaten food that falls through the containment nets, combined with all sorts of microorganisms create massive dead zones beneath them.

3. Farm raised salmon are fed a ground fish meal made of baitfish species that are known to accumulate toxins, not because that's what a salmon would normally eat, but because they're easier for humans to harvest. This results in farm raised salmon having much higher concentrations of lead, PCBs, mercury, etc.

4. The containment nets catch, strangle, and kill marine life such as seals, seabirds, and dolphins.

Wild caught salmon isn't a problem. It is harvested sustainably, contains less contaminants, and is often less expensive.

If you have any more questions regarding which types of fish should be avoided, the Monterey Bay Aquarium maintains an excellent online resource. You can download a pocket guide for your region here: http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr鈥?/a>What does it mean when you see a bumper sticker that says to boycott farm-raised Salmon?Farmed fish is fed . . . fish. It takes like 4 kilos of fish to make 1 kilo of salmon. What a waste!
