Law degree to learn patent law for inventions?

I can get a JD/MS in 3 years from a very good school. My engineering interests are in energy technology/environmental remediation. I'm also into logic, policy, and national solutions to energy and environmental problems, thus interest in law. I'm more of an engineer at heart though

Ideally, I'd like to design environmental technology using patent law experience to push it to market while being an advocate on policy (talking head maybe? haha). Would a law degree and masters combo sound reasonable?Law degree to learn patent law for inventions?Experience in patent law may not be particularly helpful in pushing a product to market.

All education is good for one's career and higher-level education like a JD and an MS can be very good. But if you have education over vastly different fields, you may appear as someone who can't stick with anything and that may prevent some companies from hiring you. On the other hand, if you are looking to create your own job, your own company, your gut feeling is the best compass.

If right now you think you want to be designer of environmental technology (that is a pretty broad class of technology by the way), I would pursue the engineering work. Maybe take law classes on the side if it is of interest to you. Also, join and be active in networking groups in the field of environmental technology. If you are willing to give your time, you can rise up the ranks of these groups pretty quick and then be in a position to shape policy.

Good Luck!
