Besides Agent Orange, that caused caused mutations and environmental problems in Vietnam. What were some negative remnants of the Cold War?1. Large amounts of nuclear arms in the former Soviet republics, such as Ukraine. The dissolution of the central Soviet authority created a vacuum in which nuclear weapons could have been sold to unstable states or terrorist organizations. This was solved by the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, in which Ukraine agreed to give up all of its nuclear arms to Russia for disposal, and them signing the nuclear nonproliferation pact.
2. Governments that were supported by each of the super powers that were tyrannical. This included Iraq (which both the US and USSR supported, depending on the time period), North Korea (USSR), Cuba (USSR), Egypt (USA), and Tunisia(USA). There were many more which were tyrannical within the period of the Cold War, but did not survive past the dissolution of the Soviet Union. What were some negative remnants of the Cold War?After the US withdrew from Vietnam in 1973 the Democratically controlled Congress disengaged the US from the Cold War. When Jimmy Carter was elected president he institutionalized the neo-isolationist policies being pursued by the Congress. For the next eight to ten years the USSR went berserk and sponsored Wars of National Liberation in SEA, South and Central America, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. They deployed SS-20 missiles in Europe to neutralize NATO. Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Congress sat on their butts and did little or nothing to oppose them. Ronald Reagan was elected by the American people to reengage the Soviet Union in the Cold War, and brought it to a successful end within about ten years.
However, the "remnants of the Cold War" this period of inaction left behind are that Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia are still unstable and the source of most of the world current problems. That is one "remnant of the Cold War" that still effects us today....
