Max profits sometimes means that you min costs by polluting (dumping garbage, overusing resources etc). Environmentalists would like consumers to take into account environmental issues. This will have an effect on companies/governments as polluting will now be seen as a cost (less customers, bad reputation etc). In other words the whole issue is for companies/governments to internalize the external costs of (ie.) polluting. Economics and politics work in both ways. It is up to the economic agents to show which way is more desirable.
